Chai
What does chai taste like?
Chai tastes creamy and lightly sweet, with warm spice and a strong tea backbone. Think of a milky, aromatic tea that is comforting first and lively second.

01
The first sip
Chai arrives creamy and a little sweet. The milk softens everything, so the first impression is rounded and warm rather than sharp.
02
The middle: spice
Then the spices come through. Cardamom is floral and fragrant, ginger adds a bright heat, and cinnamon or cloves give a deeper warmth. In a good cup they blend, so you taste a single aromatic flavour rather than a list of ingredients.
03
The finish: tea
Underneath it all is strong black tea, malty and slightly astringent. That backbone is what stops chai from tasting like spiced milk, and it is what leaves you wanting another sip.

How it compares
A few reference points help if you are new:
- Versus a tea bag cup: stronger, creamier and sweeter, with spices.
- Versus coffee: no bitterness or roast, more floral and milky.
- Versus a chai latte: less sugary and foamy, more tea.
- Versus hot chocolate: lighter and more aromatic.

How to order your first chai
Start with a classic. If you like strong flavours, order Kadak Chai. If you prefer something softer and richer, try Kashmiri Chai. Ask for it as it comes, then adjust sweetness or spice next time. At Tapri Chai, Kadak Chai is $4.49 and Kashmiri Chai is $4.99.
Questions, answered.
Is chai sweet?
Traditionally yes, it is made with sugar. How much varies, and many cafes will adjust it if you ask.
Is chai spicy?
It is warming rather than hot. Ginger and pepper add a gentle heat, but the drink is not chilli-spicy.
Does chai taste like coffee?
No. It has no roasted bitterness. It tastes of milk, spice and tea.
What is chai good for if I do not like tea?
Many people who dislike plain tea enjoy chai because milk, sugar and spice soften the tea’s edges.
Where can I try chai for the first time in Ottawa?
