What Diwali food is about
Households prepare or buy sweets, called mithai, and savoury snacks, called namkeen, weeks in advance. Guests are offered a plate on arrival, and friends exchange boxes. The details differ widely between families and regions.

Fried, crisp and spicy snacks balance the sweets. Samosas and kachoris are typical, and chaat is a favourite for gatherings. These fit well:
